Abstract:

Secondary atomization of droplets has been characterized in the past for Oh<0.1. Modes of deformation and breakup had been categorized based on Weber number. However, little data are available on breakup of droplets at high Ohnesorge number (Oh>0.1). This study focuses on providing qualitative results to understand the secondary breakup of droplets for Oh~. Shadowgraphy was utilized to analyze the behavior of droplet in a continuous air-jet. Experiments were carried out using 94% Glycerin 6% DI water solution for 35 ≤ We ≤ 120. In addition to the bag and multimode breakup, the droplet exhibited unique behavior of peripheral curving. The influence of aerodynamic forces on the abnormal behavior of the droplet is also presented.
